Through our new Blue Initiative – supporting maritime sustainability and ocean conservation – we’re partnering with The Perfect World Foundation to back Kenya’s first female Reef Ranger, empowering both marine ecosystems and women in conservation.

We sat down with Daniel Wilke, Marketing Director at The Perfect World Foundation, to learn more about the coral reef plantation project we are supporting – why it matters, how it works, its challenges, and the progress so far.

Why is planting coral reefs important?

Planting coral reefs, for example through one of our partners in Kenya, is crucial for restoring the ocean’s ecosystem. Corals preserve biodiversity, protect coastlines from erosion, strengthen fish stocks, and help combat climate change.

How does it work in practice?

In the project Greencarrier is supporting, corals are grown and planted on damaged reefs to restore the marine environment. Divers and marine biologists monitor the growth, and the local community is involved to ensure long-term sustainability.

What are the current challenges with planting reefs?

Challenges today include the impact of climate change, such as rising temperatures and ocean acidification, which make it harder for corals to survive and grow.

A key factor for success is involving the local population. To protect the reefs long-term, those who live along the coast must understand their value – both for the ecosystem and their own future through fishing and tourism. That’s why our project actively works with education and local engagement, so that more people see the importance of protecting our oceans.

At the same time, funding is a major challenge. Planting and protecting coral reefs require resources, and the project depends on support from donations and partnerships to continue its work. That’s why it’s important to support initiatives like this – together we can make a real difference for our oceans and future generations.

How much have you planted so far, and what are the plans going forward?

So far, the project has planted over 42,000 corals, restored 5,200 m² of coral reefs, placed 4,000 artificial reef structures, and protected 69 hectares of marine environment. The Perfect World Foundation will continue supporting the education of Reef Rangers, so that more divers gain the knowledge and tools to actively restore and protect the reefs. Through their work, the ocean’s ecosystems are preserved while also inspiring their local communities to care for the oceans for the future.

1,000 tonnes of biofuel insets available – free of charge

Greencarrier is making 1,000 tonnes of Maritime Biofuel Insets available to customers on a first-come, first-served basis. Companies can claim their biofuel inset by signing up via a form on Greencarrier’s website. Once they’ve signed up and placed their next booking, Greencarrier will automatically apply the biofuel inset to that shipment.

“We aim to raise awareness of how simple and accessible this solution is, while also helping our customers integrate it into their operations. This campaign invites our customers to be part of the transition by showing how easy it is to reduce emissions using Maritime Biofuel Insets. As a transport company, we not only have a responsibility to offer more sustainable solutions – we also have a role to play in actively driving the shipping industry toward a fossil-free future,” says Patrik Westræus, Head of Sustainability at Greencarrier.

Shipping Made Fossil-Free’ is fully funded by Greencarrier as part of its newly launched Greencarrier Blue Initiative, which supports concrete efforts to reduce the environmental impact of global shipping.

A simple switch with big impact – keeping long-term goals on track during uncertain times

Maritime Biofuel Insets allow companies to cut fossil CO₂ emissions by up to 100% by replacing conventional marine fuels with verified, renewable biofuels. Similar to how renewable electricity relies on the mass-balance principle, these insets ensure an equivalent amount of biofuel is used within the global shipping sector, even if it’s not directly on the vessel transporting a company’s goods.

Switching to biofuels for a container shipment is an affordable investment. For example, applying Maritime Biofuel Insets to a route between Asia and Europe would cost around €250 for an average TEU.

Taking responsibility – leading the way toward fossil free shipping

“As the political and policy world loses momentum – with the EU scaling back on CSRD and anti-sustainability sentiments gaining ground – it’s more important than ever for companies to step up, take responsibility, and accelerate the shift toward a fossil-free shipping industry,” says Patrik Westræus.

Greencarrier’s Biofuel Insets campaign is more than just a free trial – it’s a step toward realizing the company’s vision of Creating a Sustainable Tomorrow, one shipment at a time.

About Maritime Biofuel Insets:

The biofuel used in the Maritime Biofuel Insets is produced from agricultural residues. After upgrading, it is distributed via the European gas network to terminals where it is converted into liquefied form (LBG). The biofuel is then transported for bunkering and used in shipping. The insets build on a book-and-claim-methodology.

How to apply for a biofuel inset:

To claim a biofuel inset, customers can sign up through this form. Once signed up and after placing your booking, Greencarrier will automatically apply the biofuel inset to that shipment.

There’s no additional cost – it’s completely free for one shipment. Once the booking is completed, customers will receive documentation confirming the CO₂ reduction achieved through the shipment.

We cannot sit and wait for others to act. The climate crisis is here and now, says Patrik Westræus, Head of Sustainability at Greencarrier.

In June 2024, Greencarrier took a significant step forward in its sustainability offering with the launch of Maritime Biofuel Insets – a product that enables a reduction of carbon emissions from sea transport by up to 100%.

By offering the benefits of biomethane in its transport solutions, Greencarrier has created a solution that is not only easy for customers to adopt, but also drives the shipping industry in a more sustainable direction.

When customers choose Maritime Biofuel Insets for their sea transport and decide on the percentage of emissions they want to reduce, Greencarrier ensures that an equivalent amount of fossil fuel is replaced with biomethane (LBG) using the book-and-claim method. By substituting fossil fuel with a renewable alternative, the environmental impact is reduced immediately. A certificate is then issued, documenting the achieved CO2 reduction.

Challenging the cost barrier of reducing emissions in sea transport

Patrik highlights that eliminating carbon emissions from a container shipment is an affordable investment.

For example, using Maritime Biofuel Insets on a route between Asia and Europe would be approximately €250 for an average TEU.

“In relation to the total transport cost, this is a marginal expense. Investing in sustainability is not just a responsibility – it is also a competitive advantage,” says Patrik.

Investments in new Sustainability Reporting

When the CSRD directive came into effect in 2025, many companies faced extensive requirements to report their climate impact. Patrik notes that while the increased reporting requirements are time-consuming, they are also crucial.

In 2024, Greencarrier invested in advanced data collection and reporting systems. These efforts not only strengthen Greencarrier’s own sustainability work but also make it easier for customers to access reliable emissions data, including Scope 3 emissions.

We cannot wait for IMO, the EU, or anyone else to take the next stepthe climate crisis demands action now, concludes Patrik Westræus.

With solutions like Maritime Biofuel Insets, Greencarrier demonstrates that it is possible to combine sustainability with business value – while also inspiring others to follow suit.

Turning the tide: The importance of salvaging maritime waste https://greencarrier.com/turning-the-tide-the-importance-of-salvaging-maritime-waste/ Tue, 11 Mar 2025 08:37:01 +0000 https://greencarrier.com/?p=4238 The oceans are the lifeblood of our planet, supporting diverse ecosystems and sustaining economies. Yet, they are under siege from a growing crisis: maritime waste. Abandoned fishing gear, shipwreck debris, and hazardous materials accumulate in our waters, endangering marine life. Salvaging maritime waste provides a critical solution, focusing on the removal and recovery of these harmful pollutants from the ocean. By safely extracting and repurposing materials from the sea, salvaging not only alleviates environmental damage but also creates economic opportunities through the restoration of maritime spaces and resources.

The post Turning the tide: The importance of salvaging maritime waste appeared first on Greencarrier.

]]>
Organizations like The Perfect World Foundation are at the forefront of this, and to address these pressing issues, we have partnered up on Project Ocean, a series of initiatives aimed at protecting our oceans. These efforts include:

  • Salvaging and recycling maritime waste
    • Plantation of coral reefs
    • Raising awareness through beach clean-ups

In this first piece of our new series Turning the tide, we explore the initiative of salvaging maritime waste – what it is, how it works and its challenges and benefits – not only for the environment, but also the economy and society.

    Understanding maritime waste

    Sources and impact
Maritime waste originates from various sources, including shipping operations, fishing activities, offshore energy production, and illegal dumping. For instance, abandoned fishing gear, also called ghost fishing gear, continues to trap marine life long after being discarded, while microplastics infiltrate food chains and harm biodiversity. The environmental toll is also intensified by the economic losses for industries reliant on healthy oceans, such as fisheries and tourism.

    Salvaging vs. traditional cleanup
Salvaging maritime waste goes beyond surface-level cleanup. It involves recovering deeply submerged and large-scale debris, such as shipwrecks and abandoned equipment, which can often be overlooked in traditional cleanup efforts. This approach addresses the root causes of ocean pollution and transforms waste into valuable resources.

    Challenges of salvaging maritime waste

Salvaging maritime waste can be challenging due to environmental risks, such as pollution and habitat disruption. Logistical difficulties arise from deep-sea recovery, with harsh weather conditions, and the size and weight of the debris, requiring specialized equipment. High costs and limited economic incentives can also make large-scale cleanup efforts difficult. Legal and regulatory hurdles, including ownership disputes, international jurisdiction issues, and hazardous waste regulations, can further complicate salvage operations. Additionally, ethical concerns over disturbing historical shipwrecks and marine life must be considered.

    Benefits of salvaging maritime waste

Salvaging efforts help restore marine ecosystems by removing hazardous debris. This contributes to the recovery of biodiversity and enhances the resilience of ocean environments. Recovered materials can create avenues for new industries and markets, fostering a circular economy. Salvaging efforts can also strengthen community ties by involving local stakeholders in conservation efforts. They also preserve cultural heritage by recovering artifacts from historic shipwrecks and integrating them into educational initiatives.

The importance of turning the tide on maritime waste

Salvaging maritime waste is a powerful strategy to combat ocean pollution and increase sustainability. Despite the challenges, technological advancements and international cooperation are improving waste recovery efforts. Our vision at Greencarrier is to create a sustainable tomorrow, and through innovative approaches and collaborative efforts, we can, together with organizations like The Perfect World Foundation, support in turning the tide on maritime waste.

Maritime biofuel insets – a step forward for the maritime sector  https://greencarrier.com/maritime-biofuel-insets-a-step-forward-for-the-maritime-sector/ Fri, 07 Feb 2025 14:16:39 +0000 https://greencarrier.com/?p=4152 It’s no secret that global maritime transport largely relies on fossil fuels and has a significant environmental impact. Shipping needs to become more environmentally sustainable, and as a company operating in sea freight and logistics, we fully recognize this challenge. Through reducing emissions from the maritime industry, the shipping industry can become more responsible.

“Our vision is to create a sustainable tomorrow.”

“We must act now. We have dared to challenge ourselves, the industry, and our customers. As a logistics group, Greencarrier does not own the vessels, but we still want to positively impact the environment and offer more sustainable transport solutions. We have found a solution through Maritime Biofuel Insets, which we see as a changemaker for the industry. This is not just an option for customers looking to reduce their emissions but also a pathway for the entire industry to take a step toward a sustainable future,” says Patrik Westræus, Head of Sustainability at Greencarrier.

As simple as choosing renewable electricity

Choosing fossil-free sea transport is as easy as opting for renewable electricity – it works in a similar way. Transport is booked using the book and claim method, based on the energy needed to transport containers across the ocean.

    How it works

When booking sea transport, customers choose Maritime Biofuel Insets and decide what percentage of their transport’s emissions they want to reduce. We then replace the equivalent amount of fossil fuel with biomethane (LBG) using the book and claim methodology. By replacing fossil fuel with a renewable alternative, this immediately reduces the environmental impact.

The process is reviewed, certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), and third-party audited. This provides security for both Greencarrier and customers purchasing the fuel switch. All customers choosing Maritime Biofuel Insets receive documentation detailing how much CO₂ reduction has been achieved through the fuel transition.

This documentation can then be used for annual carbon reporting and validated by the customer’s own auditors.

“This is a very simple way for our customers to reduce their carbon emissions and contribute to more sustainable transport solutions, regardless of which ship or route they book. By choosing Maritime Biofuel Insets, customers can reduce their fossil fuel emissions by up to 100%,” says Patrik.

A step forward for the entire maritime sector

The shipping industry has been slow to transition to fossil-free alternatives, and it’s still early in the process of widely implementing fossil-free fuels. However, interest is growing rapidly. Large ships face challenges with electrification, making biomethane – in this case, sourced from agriculture – a viable alternative for the transition.

Optimizing your supply chain: What defines good logistics today? https://greencarrier.com/optimizing-your-supply-chain-what-defines-good-logistics-today/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 09:20:59 +0000 https://greencarrier.com/?p=4135 In today’s fast-changing logistics industry, it’s more important than ever to understand what defines "good logistics”. With global supply chains becoming more complex, businesses need to find a balance between cost, speed, reliability, and sustainability to stay competitive. This article explores the key components of effective logistics and offers guidance on how to optimize your supply chain in line with modern trends.

The post Optimizing your supply chain: What defines good logistics today? appeared first on Greencarrier.

    ]]>
    Defining good logistics

Ideally, shipments would arrive instantaneously, be cost-effective, and 100% reliable while minimizing environmental impact. However, reality involves trade-offs, and companies must prioritize different aspects of logistics based on their unique needs. The right balance among cost, speed, reliability, and sustainability is what ultimately defines good logistics for a company.

Key considerations for planning a logistics chain

Before diving into the logistics chain planning process, it’s essential to step back and assess the entire supply chain. This comprehensive approach ensures that improving one process doesn’t unintentionally disrupt another. It’s essential to set clear objectives. What are the primary goals for your logistics operations? Defining these goals will help shape a business strategy that aligns with your logistics chain.

    Identifying your logistics priorities

A successful supply chain hinges on prioritizing among cost, speed, reliability, and sustainability. Visualize these parameters on a three-dimensional scale: prioritizing one will inevitably affect the others. For example:

    • Speed: Ensuring that goods are delivered quickly can significantly impact customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. To achieve this, it’s essential to streamline processes and leverage the most efficient transportation methods available. One approach to enhancing speed is optimizing your supply chain network. This involves strategically locating warehouses and distribution centers closer to key markets. By reducing the distance goods need to travel, you can cut down on transit times and ensure faster deliveries.
    • Sustainability: In today’s logistics industry, sustainability is a key priority. Companies are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their operations and are seeking ways to reduce their carbon footprint. One effective approach is to consider sea shipping and biofuel insets, which allow you to choose renewable fuels for your shipments. It’s a simple, cost-efficient solution that makes a real difference in emissions.
    • Cost: If minimizing costs is the main concern, it’s important to look beyond just direct transportation costs. Indirect costs, such as delayed shipments can lead to missed market opportunities, which can be far more significant than the transportation costs themselves. In the retail industry, timing is everything. A delay in delivering seasonal goods, such as holiday items, can result in substantial financial losses. Therefore, understanding the bigger picture is essential for effective logistics planning.

    Adapting to modern logistics challenges

Today’s logistics environment is influenced by several emerging trends, including digital transformation, increased focus on sustainability, and global supply chain disruptions. Adopting digital tools and platforms can enhance real-time tracking, automate processes, and improve overall efficiency. Meanwhile, embracing sustainable practices is not only beneficial for the environment but can also strengthen your brand’s reputation and meet growing consumer demand for more sustainable options.

    Improve your supply chain

The future of logistics is dynamic, with trends such as automation, digitalization, and sustainability continuing to shape the industry. By focusing on these evolving areas, companies can ensure their logistics operations remain robust and adaptable.

At Greencarrier, we assist our customers in the various challenges of logistics to align with their specific goals, whether it will be reducing their CO2 emissions, improving cost-efficiency or enhancing delivery speed.

Q: What excites you most about starting operations in the Czech Republic?

It’s an opportunity to build a new and fresh way of providing consolidation services. By combining the values of Greencarrier with a personal and customer-centred approach, I’m looking forward to creating something impactful here. The Czech market is vibrant, with plenty of untapped potential.

Q: Can you share some insights about the logistics market in the Czech Republic?

The market shows strong demand for consolidated shipments and cost-effective inland transport, with major ports like Hamburg playing a key role. Southern ports, especially Koper, are growing quickly and have become important for the local market. We are now focusing on developing our direct service from China to Prague as a key product alongside our other services.

Q: What industries are prominent in the Czech Republic, and how do they influence your approach?

As a neutral consolidator, we serve freight forwarders, enabling us to provide impartial and efficient solutions. The Czech Republic boasts a diverse industrial base, with key sectors including automotive, machinery, electronics, and retail. The rapid growth of e-commerce further strengthens these markets. This industrial landscape drives a high demand for imports, which is why we prioritized establishing a reliable import service from China to meet our customers’ needs effectively.

Q: What trends do you see shaping the logistics industry in the Czech Republic?

Sustainability and digitalization are the two biggest trends. Sustainability is still in its early stages here, but it’s gaining momentum. Certificates for emissions and eco-friendly transport options are becoming increasingly important. Digitalization is also taking off, albeit more slowly than in regions like the Nordics. We’re ensuring we’re prepared for both developments as they accelerate and can already offer options like Maritime Biofuel Insets to customers.

Q: What services will be your primarily offer to customers?

In addition to import and export LCL products, such as direct service from China to Prague, IPI services (Inland Point Intermodal), and a bonded warehouse in Prague, we aim to provide a personalized approach to each customer. Tailored solutions and building strong relationships are our top priorities.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share about your future plans?

Ultimately, we’re here to build a new consolidation service that’s trusted, neutral, young, and fresh. By collaborating closely with our branches and worldwide partners, I’m confident we can bring a new perspective to consolidation services in the Czech Republic. It’s a great time to be starting this journey!

How long have you worked here?

20 years and a few days now. Overall, I’ve been in the shipping industry for 27 years and a few months.

What are your interests outside of work?

Family and football. But always family first. I have a girlfriend and two kids who keeps me quite busy.
I follow two football teams – our local team in Aarhus, AGF, and then Liverpool. I’m also active as a board member in the local football club where I live.

How would you describe your role?

It’s a role where I’m involved in all aspects of our daily jobs. I follow our Customer Service, both on import and export side. I’m involved in our sales and control our equipment. I’m also involved on the finance side, checking our projects, and making sure everything is correct.

What is the most exciting part of your job?

Just as mentioned above. That I’m involved in everything and can follow everything from A to Z. It also means that you can have one plan for your working day, but when you get in office you must adapt to whatever has happened overnight.

How would you describe the culture at Greencarrier?

Great. Just great. I really feel that we are all following our core values in all offices, especially when we get together for events.

What is the main reason you chose to work at Greencarrier?

My boss, Morten, and I had quite similar working paths, working in the same companies but not at the same time. We finally worked together but then he moved to Greencarrier. After some time, I felt the need for a change and then it was obvious to call Morten. I called around and everyone had only good things to say about Greencarrier.

When do you feel proud of being part of Greencarrier?

The way the company treat the employees and all the social projects that we are involved in. For example, here in Aarhus we sponsor an old wooden sailboat, which then offers kids with different difficulties a trip around the bay of Aarhus. We are invited to join the trips and it brings such joy to see the smiles on the kids’ faces.

Do you have any advice for customers planning their shipments?

Give us a call and let us find the best solution for your shipment together.

What advice do you have for those who want to work with your team at Greencarrier?

Just do it! And when you join, just follow our values and everything will be alright.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Always remember the humor and joy.
